March 2008

The Club Manager search committee has been formed and has been meeting regularly. The composition of this committee was initially established by the board to begin the search process. The initial members of the group included (and continues to be) Jennifer Yahr, Rear Commodore, Bill Newberry, Race Officer, Kristin King, Food & Beverage Officer, and Maya Cohen, Membership & Education Officer. Maya Cohen provided initial coordination of this group until the entire committee was formed, and a permanent leader was elected.

The idea was to have board and non-board members participate on this committee. Care was taken to ensure that the selectees represented different communities in the club, such as, race, cruising, long standing members, new members and social members. The additional members on this committee are Ross Babcock, Kristen Moroney, and Ken Porter.

The full committee selected Jennifer Yahr as Chairman. The committee has updated the Club Manager’s job description, reviewed the applicant resumes received to date, developed an interview process and will work with the membership to determine selection criteria.

More information will be provided at the Town Meeting on March 15th

Clubhouse repairs

The roofs over the dining room, ladies and men’s rooms, and furnace area have been installed, and have passed the “first” test for leakage from the recent rain. The sliding door in the Captains Room has been replaced, and the new decks over the roofs will go back as soon as the weather “breaks”. We are currently considering replacement of the doors in the dining room. They leak, and we don’t want to replace the dining room carpet until we are sure that the leaks have been stopped. The carpet replacement may have to wait until next year.

The Great Room has been painted, and the sound deadening panels will be installed in the next few weeks. This long awaited project has been thoroughly researched by the Decorating and Cookbook committees to ensure that we will have the desired sound deadening effect without changing the look of the interior. Again, thanks to both of these committees who have not only raised the money for this project, but have also spent many hours ensuring that the job will be done correctly.

Again, the patio area will begin as soon as we can see the ground. With this winter we hope it will be before July. Contact Erik Greven 784-5100, or email with any questions.

Waterfront

We have given permission to a local internet provider to install a small antenna on the dock house. This will provide access to the internet from your boats. There is a small fee for use, which is paid directly to the provider. Let us know how this works.

Also, we purchased a weather station and a webcam that will be installed on the dock house. The weather station will allow you to review weather updates on-line. The webcam will look straight into the harbor and if you are moored near Mizpah, you should be able to see your boat.

Thank you to Dan King who has volunteered his services (at no cost) to make this “high tech” stuff work. Contact Tony Jessen 771-0823, or email with any questions.

Junior Program

This program is up and running and currently most of the coaching and instructor positions are filled. A great group is returning and they are eagerly looking forward to the start of the first session. An introductory parents evening was held and we continue to have enormous interest in our “world class” program. Member-only sign up is open through March 24th. After the 24th, sign up will be opened to non-members. Non-member kids pay a “premium” for participation and we already have a long list of applicants.

The program will have approximately the same number of kids (60 per two week session, with three sessions planned for the summer), and the same classes of instruction and racing as last year. As previously mentioned, we continue to update the junior fleet so that the program remains competitive.

If you have any questions about the program go to the Jr Program section of the website or review the upcoming club newsletter for details. Skip Yale, Junior Program Officer, and his committee have done a great job. Contact Skip Yale at 272-2991 or email with any questions.

Cruising – The cruise committee has also been very active planning for an exciting summer of travel to new places and old favorites. The upcoming newsletter will provide the specific dates. Contact David Potts, Cruise Officer, 775-4633, or emailwith any questions.

Racing

Another very active summer is planned, including all of the traditional PYC weekend and weekday events. NOR’s and sign up forms are available on-line.

Members are invited to man the committee boat for weeknight races. Instruction on running the Lindsay Lord is available from Bob Putnam, Waterfront Steward. A signup sheet to volunteer is available on-line.

We are planning several new activities during Friday night's Monhegan party. Additionally, the Fall Series will be extended into October. Contact Bill Newberry, Race Officer, 775-4598, email with any questions.

Entertainment and Education

These committees are separate and very active. Check the web site for upcoming entertainment events and educational seminars. Contact Maya Cohen, Membership & Education Officer, 741-2734, or email and Mary Smith, Entertainment Officer, 885-2415, or email with any questions.

As you can see, we have many volunteers working on various committees and this email would go on forever if I listed them all! The club cannot operate without you all, and many, many thanks to everyone.

Input for the next club newsletter is expected by March 21st, with a finished newsletter ready for distribution to the membership during the first week in April. This will provide you with many of the details that are mentioned above.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me on my cell 207-450-5658 or email .

Daylight savings time is here, and the boats will be in the water soon! I look forward to seeing you on the water this season.
