Portland Yacht Club, located in Falmouth, Maine just north of Portland, seeks a summer sailing Program Administrator/Head Instructor for Summer 2024 and beyond. This new position will be responsible for overseeing and organizing our youth sailing enrollment and our non-racing sailing classes.
The creation of this role reflects the goal of the Portland Yacht Club, as it studies our junior sailing program, to commit to sailing excellence in all aspects and age levels. We want our coaches and junior program administrators to have clear responsibilities and expect from them the shared commitment to excellence along with demonstrated sailing experience and proficiency.
The Program Administrator/head Instructor will assist the Sailing/Race Director in all aspects of sailing program execution:
-safety/compliance, etc.
-Lesson planning/daily schedule for non-race team programs
-Behavior/instructor support
-Manages Attendance/enrollment
-On-water coaching/support when/where needed
-Manages all non-racing instructors on a day-to-day basis in consultation with Sailing Director
-Manages Youth evening racing/day races/invites
-Responsible for "Minnows", our final week introduction to sailing program.
This is an outstanding opportunity to join a team at the professional level that is committed to improvement. The position is full-time June-July-August, with growth potential.

Founded in 1869, three years after the city of Portland was leveled by the great fire, Portland Yacht Club is one of the oldest, continuously operating yacht Clubs in the US. The Club is located in Falmouth, Maine, on the shores of beautiful Casco Bay, just north of Portland. PYC is a private Club, open only to members, their guests, and visiting yachtsmen.

Our boating season runs from May through mid-October. Full-time and part-time positions are available. Responsibilities include providing safe transportation to and from members’ moored vessels using the Club’s launches. Cleaning boats, fueling, assisting with tie-ups, assisting with boarding, etc. are also part of the responsibilities.
Rate of pay is $18-$20/hr certification reimbursed over 2 seasons (completion of 2 seasons worked)

The PYC Junior program fosters a life-long love of the sport of sailing in a safe, educational, and fun environment
The Portland Yacht Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program is seeking Instructors who are both passionate about sailing and teaching younger sailors the skills necessary to be safe, comfortable, and competent sailors. Our program offers instruction for beginners through advanced sailors. There are positions available for adventure, race and non-race classes. Our fleet of over 50 boats includes Optis, 420s, J24 and Colgate 26. Our instructors must be responsible, dependable and maintain the highest level of safety awareness and professionalism within our program. Instructors are invited to participate in local J24, Etchells and PHRF racing as well as weekly dinghy racing.
Our program involves over 100 students, 10-12 staff members, 2-3 apprentice instructors and assorted volunteers.
Competitive salaries offered commensurate with experience and certifications.
Requirements
- Minimum: 16 years old.
- Minimum: current US SAILING CERTIFICATION, Level One
- Follow established curriculum and lesson plans with ability to add in own style and flair
- Ability to work with a wide range of student ages, aptitudes, abilities and maturity
- Experience in racing, race committee and regatta operation preferred but not necessary
